The research in this thesis will consist of developing 3D U-Net architectures for accurate binary segmentation of tumors from brain magnetic resonance images (MRIs) and implementing a collaboritive augmented reality (AR) viewing and interaction environment for volumetric medical images. It examines different network architecture and training parameters for a total of ten unique network implementations. These networks are trained and tested on the Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS) Challenge 2018 dataset to achieve maximal Dice score. This dataset provides a variety of voluemetric images of both high and low grade gliomas, allowing it to generalize well to a broad range of brain tumors. The BraTS dataset consists of 285 images containing brain tumors and their manual pixel-level segmentations. This study divides these into training, validation, and test datasets. Brain tumor segmentation provides a valuable tool to medical doctors (MDs) analyzing brain MRIs. In addition to using neural networks to segment volumetric images, this research shows the implementation and use of AR to provide a natural environment for collaboritively viewing and interacting with volumetric medical images. The aim of this is to allow a faster and more natural way to visualize volumetric medical data as well as to enable education and collaboration both locally and remotely. Accomplishing these objectives allows MDs to perform and convey medical image analyses faster and with improved accuracy. In terms of patient care, this enables quicker and more informed decisions. In terms of education, it allows MDs to convey information more effectively both to other MDs and their patients.
